South Africa is rich in flavours, and when it comes to drinks, there are several traditional favourites that you are sure to find at gatherings and celebrations.

One of them is gemere, a homemade non-alcoholic fermented ginger beer that has become a favourite at traditional events, weddings and family gatherings.

The refreshing drink is a great way to add variety to your drinks table.

Gemere is also often enjoyed with food and other traditional favourites, making it a popular choice for celebrations where people come together to eat, drink and enjoy each other’s company.

The good news is you don’t need many ingredients to make your own.

While there are now several pre-mixed ginger beer options available to buy, making your own gemere at home can be a fun way to prepare for Heritage Day.

Here is a cool recipe:

Ingredients

  • 50g ground ginger
  • 2 litres cold water
  • 24g cream of tartar
  • 24g tartaric acid
  • 5 Cups brown sugar
  • 1 Pineapple diced

Method:

  1. In a pot, bring the ground ginger and 2 litres of water to a boil while stirring.
  2. Pour the mixture into a 20litre bucket.
  3. Add cold water to the bucket and five more cups of sugar and stir thoroughly.
  4. Add pineapple stir well and leave to brew overnight at room temperature.

Serve your homemade gemere chilled and enjoy it with your favourite South African dishes.
