We asked you what you missed most about KZN - and your answer was clear, it seems everyone is having beach withdrawal. So, we picked out the three beaches you missed the most and added a few you should give a try when lockdown ends.

Anstey's Beach

“Going to Anstey’s beach on a Sunday afternoon. The vibe and atmosphere are just so great. This can only be in Durban.” Tania Naidoo

Situated on the Bluff, close to Cave Rock, Anstey’s Beach is a popular spot for surfers and kiteboarders. The rock and tidal pools are perfect for exploring with your little ones and the lifeguard protected beach and its unspoilt beauty is perfect for a day out with the family. Expect a quieter and more relaxed beach experience with more locals than tourists visiting.

Best spot for… a bunny chow at one of the nearby eateries such as the Green Dolphin and Curry Leaf.

Umdloti Beach

“Going to Umdloti beach, having a picnic…” Selvie Odayan

You’ll find this gem of a beach along KZN’s Dolphin Coast, just 10km north of Umhlanga Rocks.

Expect heavenly warm water perfect for hours of swimming, rock pools to entertain the kids, inshore reefs, interesting marine life, lifeguards on duty, and shark nets to ensure your safety.

The beach is a favourite spot for surfers, kiteboarders, windsurfers, and paddlers. It’s also a great spot for some dolphin and whale watching. We can’t wait to get back.

Best spot for … drinks with friends. Try the SandBar for a delicious cocktail or stop by Bush Tavern.

Margate Beach

“(I miss) school golf tours down to Margate in the 90ties.” Francois Venter

Situated on KZN’s South Coast, Margate is known for plenty of sun, fun, and holidays away. Expect a world-class beach with blue flag status when visiting Margate Beach. The water is warm, so it is great for swimming and paddling. There are plenty of snorkelling spots and a tidal pool that is perfect for your little kids.

Protected by lifeguards in peak times and shark nets to keep predators away, Margate offers one of the safest swimming options for families and offers a great deck for whale watching, as well as a kilometre-long pathway for those romantic beach walks.

Best spot for… delicious ice-cream and one of several top parlours in the area, including Bambi Ice Cream Parlour.

List of other popular KZN beaches:

uShaka Beach: This Durban beach has the coveted blue flag status. It’s a favourite spot for families and joggers.

Thompson's Bay Beach: Nestled in a cove, Thompson's Bay Beach in Ballito is a great spot for swimmers who want to be sheltered from the wind. It is also a popular destination for holidaymakers.
