Why thousands of people flock to KZN for the annual Sardine Run
Updated | By East Coast Radio
One of the biggest and most exciting marine experiences is returning to KwaZulu-Natal. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for the 2026 Sardine Run.
It’s almost that time of year when millions of sardines migrate from the colder waters of the Cape coast towards the Wild Coast and KwaZulu-Natal. Known as the annual Sardine Run, the natural event attracts fishing enthusiasts from across South Africa.
The Sardine Run is considered one of the greatest marine migrations and a spectacular display of marine activity.
Reports of early sardine sightings were already recorded along the KZN South Coast during the last week of May. Speaking to East Coast Radio, Vinesh Soogreem from Angling Times indicated that the main run could begin at any time, although conditions suggest it may coincide with the June school holidays.

What to expect at the Sardine Run
Apart from watching thousands of sardines migrating into the South Coast, the event is also a favourite among fishing enthusiasts, as the abundance of sardines attracts a variety of fish species, including whales and dolphins. So, the event can also turn into an exciting dolphin and whale watching experience.
Also expect to learn more about marine life and local fishing traditions.
In addition, there are also options for scuba diving and shark cage diving.
When does the Sardine Run take place?
According to tourism authorities on the KZN South Coast, the Sardine Run typically begins between May and can continue until August. However, the exact timing varies from year to year, depending on ocean temperatures and weather conditions.
What should you wear?
As the Sardine Run takes place during winter, temperatures along the coast can be cool and windy. Visitors should dress warmly and wear windproof or waterproof jackets, especially when spending extended periods on the beach or at sea.
Comfortable footwear is also recommended, especially water-friendly shoes.
Don’t forget essentials such as sunscreen and a camera to capture all the action.
If you plan on fishing during the Sardine Run, ensure you have the appropriate fishing equipment and safety gear.
It is also important to follow local regulations and safety guidelines while fishing or participating in marine activities.
Make the most of the experience
Several tour operators offer Sardine Run packages that include guided tours and boat trips. Booking in advance is recommended, as the event attracts many visitors.
Whether you’re into fishing or simply looking for a unique family outing, the KZN Sardine Run offers a front-row seat to one of nature’s most remarkable spectacles.
