Home Affairs extends operating hours this school holidays
The Department of Home Affairs has extended its operating hours to give learners more time to apply for and collect their Smart ID cards.
School holidays are in full swing, and learners across the country are enjoying a well-deserved break. While many families are travelling, visiting loved ones and making the most of the time off, this is also the perfect opportunity to tick an important task off your to-do list - getting an ID.
The Department of Home Affairs has announced from 1 to 21 July, selected offices will extend their operating hours from 4pm to 6pm, specifically for Smart ID card applications and collections. The initiative aims to help learners and young people get their identity documents without missing school.
Having a Smart ID card is more than just owning an official document, it’s your legal proof of identity and one of the most important documents you’ll ever have.
An ID is needed when applying to universities, colleges or other tertiary institutions. It is also required when applying for a driver’s licence, opening a bank account, seeking employment, accessing financial services, writing certain examinations and registering to vote once you’re eligible.
South African citizens can apply for their first ID from the age of 16, making the school holidays an ideal time for first-time applicants.
You can apply at a Department of Home Affairs branch if you are a first-time applicant. Those who want to replace or want to change from Green ID books to Smart Card ID can do so through participating bank branches, or by using the Department’s online booking platform.
For first-time applicants, the Smart ID card is free. However, if you’re replacing a lost or damaged Smart ID card, the fee is R140.
Whats documents do you need when applying for an ID?
First-time applicants need:
- An original birth certificate (or unabridged birth certificate where required).
- A parent or legal guardian to accompany applicants under 18 and provide their South African ID document.
- Supporting documents if requested by Home Affairs.
For re-issuing or replacements of ID, you will need:
- Current/Old ID: Your green bar-coded ID book or Smart ID card.
- Additional Status Documents: A certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or spouse's death certificate (if applicable).
- Proof of Residence: A utility bill or bank statement
Getting your ID during this school holidays means you don't have to worry about waiting until schools reopen and queues become even longer. It’s a simple and important task that could save learners time and frustration when the ID might be needed for school, work or other important life milestones.
