Heartwarming: Couple ties the knot in hospital after car crash on wedding day
Updated | By Poelano Malema
This couple didn’t allow anything to get in the way of becoming husband and wife, even after a car crash left the groom seriously injured on their wedding day.
Love is one of the most powerful forces, and for one Florida couple, nothing was going to stop them from saying “I do”.
Kapri DeRamus and Tyasia Thomas were supposed to tie the knot over the weekend, but their wedding day took an unexpected turn after the groom was involved in a serious car crash just minutes before the ceremony.
According to reports, the couple were due to get married at a venue about 20 minutes north of Orlando.
Thomas was reportedly stopped at a traffic light when a speeding vehicle struck the median before hitting his vehicle head-on.
“He was stopped at a traffic light, only 15 minutes from the venue and on his way to marry my sister, when a speeding vehicle struck the median and hit his vehicle head-on,” Thomas’ brother, Maurice Mathies, wrote on a GoFundMe fundraising page.
The crash left Thomas with both arms and his jaw broken. He also suffered two broken ribs and severe knee injuries, according to the GoFundMe page.
Instead of cancelling their wedding, DeRamus visited Thomas in Orlando Regional Medical Center, where the couple decided to continue with their special day.
The couple exchanged vows in the hospital room, in a private wedding.
Although the groom has been discharged, he reportedly can't provide for his family due to the injuries he suffered.
"Because of the accident, my brother-in-law, who works in a warehouse, can't even scratch his own nose, let alone go back to work to provide for his new wife. My sister has been staying with him day and night, unable to sleep, and listening to him cry out in pain at night while the medication is not strong enough to ease it.
"Now, instead of leaving for their honeymoon, they are trying to get through medical expenses, loss of income, a totaled vehicle, and the emotional weight of starting their life together this way. The fundraiser will help cover his medical costs and road to recovery while they navigate their day-to-day bills and living expenses," Mathies, wrote on the GoFundMe fundraising page.
Their wedding may not have gone according to the original plan, but the couple proved that sometimes love means making the best of an unexpected situation.
While weddings often involve months of planning, preparation and significant costs, DeRamus and Thomas showed that the most important part of the day was not the venue, decorations or perfect setting - it was their commitment to each other.
Their heartwarming story has since captured attention online, with many people celebrating the couple for refusing to let an unfortunate accident stand in the way of their love.
The couple’s hospital wedding was a beautiful reminder of what 'in sickness and in health' really means. They didn’t just say the words in their vows, they lived them out on their wedding day.
