Four smart ways to save on petrol as fuel prices rise
Updated | By Poelano Malema
As South Africans continue to feel the pinch after petrol and diesel prices increased today, here are four simple ways to make your fuel last longer.
Whether you drive, use public transport or walk to work, the rising petrol cost affects everyone in some way.
Even if you don't own a car, you are likely to feel the pinch. Higher petrol and diesel prices mean higher prices for everything else, such as groceries, deliveries and transport.
If you’re looking for ways to stretch your petrol further, here are some simple tips to consider.
Plan your trips
One of the easiest ways to save petrol is to be intentional about the trips you take.
Avoid unnecessary trips and plan your route before you leave. Knowing exactly where you’re going can help you avoid getting lost, taking wrong turns or adding unnecessary kilometres to your journey.
Slow down
How fast you drive can also affect your fuel consumption.
Frequent acceleration, sudden braking and driving at high speeds can use more fuel.
Sticking to the recommended speed limits is not only safer but can also help you use your fuel more efficiently.
Keep your car properly maintained
Regular vehicle maintenance can go a long way when it comes to fuel efficiency.
Make sure your car is serviced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and that all components are working properly.
A well-maintained vehicle is less likely to work harder than necessary, which can help you avoid wasting fuel.
Check your tyres
Make sure your tyres are properly inflated and in good condition. Under-inflated tyres can increase rolling resistance, meaning your car has to work harder to move and may use more fuel.
Check your tyre pressure regularly and make sure it matches the pressure recommended for your vehicle.
Small changes to the way you drive and maintain your car can add up over time. While you can’t control the price at the petrol station, you can take steps to make every litre go a little further.
