KwaZulu-Natal is home to thousands of people who commute every day, whether they’re travelling to school, work or some of the province’s popular shopping and entertainment destinations.

One of the most frustrating parts of commuting is finding yourself stuck in traffic. While traffic is often unavoidable, a little planning can go a long way in helping you reach your destination on time.

Here are a few easy ways to beat traffic.

  • Stay updated with traffic reports

Before leaving home, check the latest traffic updates. East Coast Radio provides live traffic reports on air and online, keeping motorists informed about accidents, congestion and road closures. Knowing what’s happening on your route can help you avoid unnecessary delays and choose an alternative road if needed.

  • Leave home a little earlier

Give yourself enough time to get to your destination. Instead of planning your journey down to the minute, allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes in case you encounter heavy traffic. If possible, avoid travelling during peak hours, which are typically between 6am and 9am, and again from 3pm to 6pm.

  • Know your route before you leave

Take a few minutes to check your route before setting off. Look at the roads you’ll be using, the traffic conditions and whether there are any delays or roadworks. Having a good understanding of your route makes it easier to adjust your plans if needed.

  • Use navigation apps

There are several apps that provide live traffic updates and can recommend quicker alternative routes based on current road conditions. They’re a simple way to save time and avoid congestion.

  • Keep an eye on the weather

Weather can have a significant impact on traffic. Rain, and fog can slow traffic. Checking the forecast before leaving home will help you prepare for possible delays and travel more safely.
