Avoid becoming a victim: The legal ways to pay traffic fines
The KZN Department of Transport has warned motorists about an increase in fake traffic fine scams, urging the public to use only approved payment channels.
Owning a vehicle comes with responsibility. Motorists are encouraged to obey the rules of the road, stick to speed limits and drive responsibly to protect not only themselves but everyone else using South Africa’s roads.
While careful driving can help motorists avoid penalties, traffic fines are sometimes unavoidable. However, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is warning the public to be on high alert, as scammers are increasingly targeting motorists with fake traffic fine notifications.
According to the department, fraudsters have been sending messages claiming recipients have outstanding traffic fines and instructing them to make payments into fraudulent accounts. Some of the messages have even been sent to people who do not own vehicles.
The department said the scam is designed to obtain victims’ banking information through fake payment platforms.
Following an increase in reports, the department has reminded motorists to pay traffic fines only through its approved channels. These include:
● In person at Traffic Camera Office in Pinetown, 4 Aubrey Road.
● Through the link www.paycity.co.za
● Via SpeedPoint at fine recovery operations.
● Section 56 written notices must be paid at the relevant courts.
Motorists are urged to ignore payment requests received via SMS, email or messaging platforms unless they have verified the fine through official channels of the traffic department.
