The much-anticipated 2018 Vodacom Durban July is almost here.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘It Is Time’. Organisers have encouraged “fashionistas and designers to use the elements of a watch face to conceptualize their designs”.

But fashion designer Tshegofatso Maotoe, owner of Tenacious Soul, warns against being too literal when it comes to the theme.

“Don’t be cliché. Interpret the theme in a unique way, for instance, do not show up in a dress with watches printed all over. Surprise us,” she told us.

Tshegofatso says last-minute shoppers should “think elegance and confidence” when looking for outfits.

“‘It Is Time’ to me sounds timeless and classic. One can easily get away with a 50's silhouette outfit inspired by Dior - skin tight on top, cinched at the waist and voluptuous at the bottom. In terms of colour, keep one solid colour and maybe break it with a different bright coloured shoe or accessory,” she told us.

Last year, dancer Zodwa Wabantu turned heads in a risqué number that helped make her a household name.

Tshegofatso says modest dressers can look sexy without showing too much skin.

“An off-the-shoulder dress always wins, also explore with a touch of lace. Throw on some red, it is known to scream sexy without showing skin,” she told us.

If you want to incorporate a few winter trends into your look, Tshegofatso suggests “conspicuous gloves and luxury fur” – faux fur that is.

The items will come in handy with the cold weather Durban is currently experiencing.

Tshegofatso says no woman should leave their house this Saturday without a backup coat or throw, a glamourous hat and a “fashionable yet functional bag”.

If all else fails, keep it simple.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” she says.
