KZN disaster teams on standby as heavy rains continue

Disaster management teams and emergency crews are on high alert in various parts of KZN as rain falls heavily in parts of KZN.

The SA Weather Service has forecast heavy rains for the remainder of the week with localised flooding a possibility in the western parts of the province as well as coastal regions today.

The department's Msawakhe Mayisela says they are prioritising the safety of residents.

"We're not going to take any chances. We're pulling out all stops to prevent loss of life and damage to property. We also want to assure our citizens that disaster management teams are ready to respond to any disaster that may be triggered by these downpours," he said.

Mayisela says no incidents have been reported to the department as yet. But he's urging people, especially those using the roads, to be careful.

"We are getting reports that it is raining all over the province of KwaZulu-Natal. This includes areas that are in the Umkhanyakude District Municipality. An area that is on the receiving end of the drought that is currently wreaking havoc in the province.We are appealing to all of those on our roads to take it easy," he said.
