Wednesday, 10 June: The Phoenix Child and Family Welfare Society

The Phoenix Child & Family Welfare Society is a registered NPO in its 39th year of existence. They rely totally on external funding for survival and clients are usually the poor, indignant members of the community. Services are rendered in Phoenix, Mount Moriah and Mount Royal.

With SA in a lockdown, millions of people across the country have been ordered to stay at home. Thousands of people in working-class areas are hard hit with little or no money to buy basic food and baby products. The Society has distributed hampers purchased from locally based small businesses and distributed them amongst their clients, the informal sector, grantees, unemployed people and those with casual low-income jobs.

They have also supported other local NGOs. Residents in Phoenix, Cornubia, Bhambayi, Inanda, Ntuzuma, Mount Moriah and Mount Royal have been assisted. Each hamper is valued at R250-00 and can feed a family of 4 for 2 weeks.
Phoenix Child Welfare continues to receive numerous calls from desperate residents who are either unemployed or ordered to stay at home without pay because of the lockdown.

These residents have limited or no food and are appealing for assistance. Phoenix Child Welfare has responded to this crisis, and with the help of donors & volunteers, have set up a Flood Relief Campaign.

On a daily basis the Society’s services range from child protection programmes, family preservation and reunification which encompasses the preventative, developmental and therapeutic component. These include, amongst others, HIV/AIDS Awareness, Child Abuse and Neglect; Youth Empowerment, Women Empowerment, Adoption and Foster Care, Poverty Alleviation (Skills Empowerment) and material relief to the poor and needy, Parenting programmes, Leadership and mentorship programmes through their Phoenix Children’s Foundation.
