Thousands enjoy new ECR event despite the weather

Five thousand concert goers celebrated along with East Coast Radio at the station’s inaugural Concert, Comedy and Craft event at Durban Botanic Gardens today, despite overcast and then rainy conditions later in the day.

Crowds at the main stage danced along to big-name acts; Mafikizolo, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Gangs of Ballet and also laughed along to top comedians. Meanwhile, those gathered at the acoustic stage, which showcased local talents like The Kickstands and Freddy L, reveled in the laidback vibes.

East Coast Radio’s General Manager Boni Mchunu says, unfortunately, the event couldn’t continue and Mango Groove was unable to perform when the event’s safety officers deemed it unsafe due to a lightning storm.

Mchunu says the rest of the day was a resounding success, “An event like today is a reminder of how music is a unifying force. People of all ages and from all backgrounds danced alongside each other, despite the overcast conditions. What better time to celebrate what makes us proudly South African than on Heritage weekend, with some of the best acts in the country?”

From stilt walkers to gumboot dancers, quirky open air décor and a kid’s zone, East Coast Radio’s Concert, Comedy and Craft in association with 1Life was entertaining from the get-go. The event also boasted a food market complete with artisanal eateries and food trucks and a craft beer, gin and whiskey area.

The event, which was sold out a week before, trended at number one on Twitter, nationally.

Mchunu has thanked East Coasters for turning up in their numbers at the very first East Coast Radio’s Concert, Comedy and Craft and has again apologized that the final act was unable to perform.
