There is a dumpling-making class in Durban where children and adults can learn the art of crafting authentic Chinese dumplings from scratch, all while soaking up a little culture and coming home with a box full of something delicious.

Durban families looking for a creative and culturally enriching activity now have a wonderful option close to home. A hands-on dumpling-making class in Somerset Park, Umhlanga, is giving children and adults the chance to step into a Chinese kitchen.

You can now learn an ancient culinary art and walk away with a box of handmade dumplings and a skill you can keep forever.

The classes are designed for complete beginners, with participants guided through every single step of the process. No prior cooking experience is needed, making it an enjoyable experience for curious young chefs aged six and upwards, as well as adults.

What happens during a dumpling-making class?

Each session runs for two hours in a warm, relaxed environment. Soft traditional Chinese music plays in the background as participants settle in and prepare for an afternoon of hands-on cooking and cultural discovery.

The class begins with the story of the dumpling itself, its long history and its deep significance in Chinese culture, particularly during New Year celebrations. From there, it moves into the practical side of things. 

Participants learn how to mix dough, prepare a flavourful filling and roll out their own wrappers by hand. The highlight of the session is mastering different folding techniques to shape their very own dumplings.

Once the folding is complete, the dumplings are cooked and tasted with a traditional Chinese dipping sauce. Each participant also gets to pack up a full box of their creations to take home and share with family.

What do participants take home?

Beyond the experience itself, everyone leaves with a recipe card so they can recreate the dish in their own kitchen whenever the craving strikes. The skills learned during the class, from mixing the dough to achieving the perfect fold, are practical and repeatable, meaning the fun does not have to stop when the class does.

What do children gain beyond cooking skills?

For many families, the appeal of the class lies in what it offers beyond a cooking class. Children receive a gentle cultural immersion, learning about the history and traditions surrounding dumplings in Chinese culture. 

They also pick up a few Mandarin words along the way, including how to say dumpling in Mandarin: jiǎozi.

Who is behind the classes?

The classes are run by Vivian Zeng, a Mandarin teacher who has called Durban her home for the past 16 years. 

"This city by the Indian Ocean has welcomed me with open arms, and I now consider it my second home. It's where I've built my life, and I love being able to share the flavours of my first home with the people of my second home," she tells East Coast Radio.

Originally from China, Vivian has spent years introducing her students to Chinese culture through food and language. Watching her students light up while getting their hands messy, making traditional treats, is what first inspired her to create a space where more children could have that same experience.

“I wanted to open it up to all the kids in Durban who are curious about cooking and trying something new. The classes are perfect for little chefs aged 6 to adults,” Zeng said.

That sentiment sits at the heart of everything she does in the classroom and in the kitchen.

Vivian hosts the classes at her home in Somerset Park, Umhlanga, which is set up as a fun and safe space for children. Classes run approximately once a month, with additional sessions scheduled based on demand.
