KZN share why their dad is awesome

Father's Day is coming up, and we know that not all heroes wear capes - they simply have the title of 'Dad'.

This coming Sunday will be all about celebrating your dad, and we asked KZN to share reasons as to why their dads are awesome.

The dads of KZN are extraordinary, from endlessly providing for their families to being the perfect role model - and even a guardian angel in heaven looking down upon their kids, they are truly incomparable heroes.

According to South African Explorer, the history and origins of Father's Day can be traced back to more than 4,000 years ago. In Babylon, a son called Elmesu carved a message to his father on a clay card. Elmesu wished his father a long and happy life. However, recognition of Father's Day only happened in the early 1900's.

The article goes on to say that several people are credited for furthering the cause of Father's Day, but Sonora Louise Smart Dodd is seen as the key person in making this great celebration happen. Sonora Dodd is seen as the Mother of the Father's Day Festival. In 1909, Sonora overheard a Mother's Day sermon and begun to recognise the hardships that her father must have gone through while bringing up his family.

When Sonora was 16, her mother died during childbirth, and left her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, to raise his six children and the newborn on his own. Sonora pondered the fact that there was a day for mothers, but not for fathers. She was initially laughed at for her efforts, but it paid off eventually.

On 19 June 1909, along with the support of Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), the first Father's Day was celebrated.

Sonora wished for Father's Day to be held on the day of her father's birthday, but due to time constraints, the celebration was held on the third Sunday in June. And that tradition has lasted throughout time since.

Salute, Sonora, for recognising the heroes in our lives!
