Discover how you can nominate someone for a life-changing surgery with Busamed and East Coast Radio this Mandela Day
Amidst uplifting stories and community efforts, The Big Favour initiative stands out as a beacon of hope this Mandela Day, offering a life-altering surgical procedure to a person in need.
Busamed Gateway Private Hospital and East Coast Radio invite nominations for individuals requiring a life-changing medical procedure they otherwise cannot access.
Darren, Carmen and Sky shared the details of this initiative, aiming to shed light on what it's all about.
Dr. Johnny De Beer, a Specialist Orthopaedic surgeon at Busamed Gateway Private Hospital, joined East Coast Breakfast to discuss the exciting proposition.
Unlike any standard giveaway, this initiative offers something intangible yet priceless; a new lease on life through a life-changing surgery.
The scope of the initiative is broad, catering not only to orthopaedics but also to cardiac, neurosurgery, gynaecology, and general surgery.

Qualifying for the surgery
Dr. De Beer explained that the surgeries included are elective, focusing on procedures that can significantly change a patient's life with minimal risk. Trauma-related surgeries, being unpredictable, are not part of this program.
The selection criterion revolves around identifying patients without medical aid who cannot afford necessary surgeries and are not receiving treatment from the public sector. By alleviating this gap, the initiative aims to transform lives, giving hope where there once was none.
The selection process
Nominations are a critical component of the initiative, and Dr. De Beer emphasized the importance of having a thorough selection process.
A specialised panel, including doctors, administrators, nurses, radiologists, anaesthetists, and other experts, scrutinize each nomination.
This board assesses where the most significant impact can be achieved. After shortlisting candidates, a personal consultation follows to ensure the candidate's eligibility and safety for the proposed procedure.
