Steyn claimed the scalps of Jermaine Blackwood lbw for 56 and Jason Holder for 23 on day two, to add to his two wickets on the opening day.
Steyn moved up to 393 wickets in his Test career, as the West Indies collapsed from their overnight total of 276 for six to be bundled out inside the first hour of play in the morning.
At lunch, in their reply, South Africa had moved to 48 for one as opener Alviro Petersen was unbeaten on 26. Dean Elgar fell in the final over before lunch, lbw for eight to Jason Holder.
Meanwhile, 15 wickets fell in a bowlers' blitz as Sri Lanka ended the day one of the second Test at 78-5, after New Zealand scored 221.
