This is where an emotional memorial service is being held for the 16 victims of Monday's accident in Shaka's Head on the north coast.

They were killed when a taxi plunged down from a bridge near the N2 highway onto train tracks before a passenger train ploughed into the wreckage.

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu says the families of the victims have decided to hold separate funerals for their relatives over the weekend.

Mthembu says the accident has shocked the entire community.

"I was in a meeting when I received the call. I rushed to the scene and I found people still lying there. I'll never forget that day. It's a sad thing, particularly for the families. It's very painful," he said.

The list of the victims has been released.
