Smith who is currently fourteenth on the elite Tour rankings finished fourth in his heat in the round of 96.
Poor surf conditions forced organisers to move the World Surf League Qualifying Series event to Willards Beach.
The Durban based surfer who was the last local man to win the event says he is deeply disappointed.
"This year is really unfortunate that the waves have not showed up. They had to move a whole beach over because there is no waves,” he said.
Smith continued, “We are probably going to see one of the worst years for swell yet.”
The twenty-seven-year-old says he is still recovering from a back injury and his elimination will give him time to retain fitness ahead of the Jay-Bay Open which begins next week.
The Jay-Bay Open is part of the World Surf League, the sport’s elite tour.
“I believe everything happens for a reason. My season has not been the greatest with my back injury I have not been the water for the past two months,” he said.
“Just me being in the water is great I was not supposed to come back for at least a month and a half.”
With poor swell conditions in Ballito organisers were forced to suspend the event until Tuesday. Dale Staples, Beyrick De Vries and Michael Februaury are the only South African surfers left in the competition.
