Durban 2022 committee to be set up
Nxumalo made the comment after returning from New Zealand this morning.
Durban was officially announced as the host city of the multi-sport event in Auckland earlier this week.
Nxumalo jetted into the King Shaka International Airport this morning after a gruelling flight home from New Zealand.
More than 100 people sang and danced when the city's 2022 Commonwealth Games delegation arrived on home soil.
The mayor says the local organising committee will work with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee in putting together the event.
Nxumalo says officials must start preparing for the Games now, so everything is completed well in advance.
He says the Games must help develop sport on the continent.
