KZN police are investigating a case of arson after a fire gutted a building at the Kloof & Highway SPCA yesterday evening.
Private investigator Brad Nathanson says a man recently broke into the property and left a threatening letter for one of the staff members.
Investigations are also underway into whether the fire and letter are related.
The Pinetown Fire Department says the inferno tore through a storeroom last night.
Sbusiso Dlamini says emergency teams were called out to the Village Road property just before 6-o'clock and by that time, he says the fire was already raging.
"When we arrived there we found that the rooms that are used as storage were well alight, the fire was through the roof. The rooms contained books and documents. They were all on fire. We contained the fire using water. Four fire engines were called out," he said.
Meanwhile, the SPCA has thanked the local community for its support following the incident.
Management's posted a message on its Facebook page confirming that no animals were hurt in the blaze.
