Game of Thrones Season 3: DVD Box Set review

If you haven’t watched one single episode of Game of Thrones, where have you been? We're claiming it as the most exciting TV in years...

What’s the story?

As Empire Magazine asked when Season 1 aired, “When was the last time a TV show or movie, really pissed you off? Proper lying in bed enraged, turning over events in your mind. How could they do it?” And that’s pretty much been the story since. Not that that’s a bad thing. It truly is a series (based on the books of course) that has no issue killing off main characters leaving the viewer in total shock. Quite simply, this has to be the most exciting TV produced in years, an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s addictive fantasy books.

A tapestry of family grievances sprawl across battleground named Westeros. At heart, it’s the Starks (honourable, naive) versus the Lannisters (ambitious, depraved). The third season primarily centers on the Lannisters in King's Landing. After defeating Stannis Baratheon at the Battle of the Blackwater, they hold a firm grasp on the Iron Throne. They are threatened by their new ally House Tyrell, powerful and manipulative players of the game.

Tyrion Lannister struggles with losing the power he had as Hand of the King, and feels his father doesn't appreciate the service he provided the family as hand. Meanwhile, Jaime Lannister continues his attempt to return home, and begins to form a bond with his road companion, Brienne of Tarth. And Daenerys Targaryen is at last reunited with her three fast-maturing dragons. And that’s just what happens to some of the cast. Saying anything more might reveal too much and spoil the experience, but suffice to say that in Season 3, the battling families clash as bonds are strained, loyalties are tested and cruel fates are met.

Who’s in it?

The cast returns. Well those that have not been killed off in Season 2 of course. Peter Dinklage is Tyrion, Maisie Williams is Arya, Lena Heady is Cersei, Emelia Clarke is Daenerys, Jack Gleeson is Joffrey and Kit Harrington is Jon Snow to name a few.

What will you remember?

The deaths. The gore. The surprises.

With what piece of information can you impress your friends?

The series has won 53 awards from 105 nominations, but shockingly so, only one Golden Globe.

What did others have to say?

"Throughout the series, the troubled continent of Westeros subtly and indirectly resonates with our own global situations, as we watch the movements of a collection of factions who all believe they deserve some shred of power or land or royalty. The show beautifully depicts a massive game of musical chairs, a world at war with doom ever present just across the border." -  Boston Globe

"The version of Game of Thrones that executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have created is a meditation on power and its slippery attractions, and perhaps power itself is the lead character in their take on the story -- it's often the entity receiving the most in-depth characterization. In this tale, power and loyalty are locked in a hypnotic dance of betrayal, compassion and confusion. Martin created -- and the HBO show has brought to vivid life -- a set of memorable outsiders who are doing their utmost to storm various bastions of power and privilege, and even their losses are fascinating. I can't look away." - Huffington Post
