The president oversaw the military ceremony, riding in a black car past thousands of troops and hundreds of tanks and missiles ahead of a parade through Tiananmen Square.

This comes a day after the Japan's army surrendered to Allied forces in 1945. About 20-million Chinese soldiers died between 1937 and 1945.

President Xi Jinping has described the eight-year conflict as "a decisive battle between justice and evil, between light and darkness".

Russia's President Vladimir Putin was prominently in attendance.
