Authorities to expedite transformation at universities

The Ministry of Higher Education says a documentary on the experiences of 32 black students at the University of Stellenbosch - has prompted to urgently deal with transformation - particularly at former Afrikaans universities.

The documentary titled Luister, was released by a student group calling itself 'Open Stellenbosch' - who say racial discrimination is rife at the institution.

Minister Blade Nzimande yesterday wrote a letter to Stellenbosch's university council - asking for a report on how the university intends to deal with the matter.

Spokesperson for the department Khaye Nkwanyana says students should not be having such experiences at any university in the country today.

He has congratulated them for making the documentary.

"This has becoeme a testimony, giving us another dimension that was not in our attention, which is what we don't always get in the reports from the Stellenbosch - from the SRC and the management, and as we understand the SRC of that institution is also white. So, obviously the reports that we get are not always entirely reflective of the reality on the ground," he said.

Meanwhile, education rights NGO -  Equal Education Law Centre says transformation should also be focused on staff at the institution.

Earlier this year, a lecturer from the university was fired for an sms written in Afrikaans, where he called a black student a 'black bastard from the white farmer'.

Equal Education Law Centre's Shireen Adams.

"So, we align ourselves with the students movement there for transformation, to redress past inequalities in tertiary education. There's been very slow transformation at the university as well," she said.
