Dawie Kriel got himself into hot water after referring to Hindus as 'idol worshippers' and 'devil disciples', following Diwali celebrations at the weekend.

He later apologised for his remarks.

A Hindu organisation was the first to lodge a complaint against him at the SAHRC.

Yesterday, the ANC and the DA opened criminal cases against Kriel - who's also facing a disciplinary hearing at his place of work.

The SAHRC's Tanuja Munnoo says they have received five complaints so far - which were registered today.

"It will be dealt with in a manner that obviously we deem necessary. So without putting any firm time frames in place, I just want to give you the assurance that the matters are being attended to and will be dealt with as speedily as possible," she said.
