SA to experience rare supermoon
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
You could be in for a treat when a supermoon occurs tonight.
The moon will appear 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual - as the full moon is closest to earth.
The South African National Space Agency's Dr Pieter Kotze says the phenomenon last occurred in 1948.
The next time this happen will be on 25 November 2034.
"The supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with the nearest position of the moon to the earth," Kotze explains.

He says the moon will be approximately 50 000 km closer to the earth when compared to other full moons.
"For a half an hour it will be most spectacular, then the moon will rise and then it will get less spectacular, but the luminacy of the moon will remain the same," Kotze says.
If you want to see it from the best vantage point, get to higher ground away from the city.
