Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says the bus had been transporting about 50 people at the time.

The blaze spread quickly and started moving away from the vehicle up a grassy bank before Durban firefighters managed to extinguish it.

"The bus pulled to the emergency lane and started to catch alight. The passengers then exited the bus but with a full load of people - it took a bit of time for them to get out. Therefore, some of them suffered some smoke inhalation injuries," he says.

Speaking to Newswatch, an eyewitness says the bus was well alight earlier this morning - while passengers were seen standing near the scene before Spaghetti Junction.

"It was a raging fire - there were pieces were falling off the bus. People from the bus were standing on the roadside. The grass near the bus also caught alight," the motorist says.

Jamieson says emergency services responded speedily to the incident.

"Credit has to be given to the Durban Fire Department as they put out the flames very quickly as the fire spread up the bank on the grass. They managed to contain it very quickly," he says.
