It is hoped the centre will draw more tourists to the area.

It will among other things boast a a museum focusing on the heritage of KwaZulu-Natal.

Local Government MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube says the project is the second phase of the development after the famous sculpture of Madiba's face at the capture site.

"We really want to make this an iconic part of the Midlands Meander. We want this place to buzz in terms of creating job opportunities but also in uplifting the standard of living of people in an around this area in particular," she said.

Yesterday marked the 53rd anniversary of Madiba's arrest in Howick.
