Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital a culmination of Madiba's dreams: Graca Machel
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
One of Madiba's dreams has finally come true - the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital has been officially opened.
The hospital in Parktown has 200 beds and 10 operating theatres.
It can treat about 2500 patients per month.
The top floor of the hospital has 27 rooms for families and hopes to have its corridors bustling with patients come 2017.
Speaking at the official launch, Judge Dikgang Moseneke said Nelson Mandela represents giving.
"This hospital is a reminder to all of us that there's place for hard work, there's place for excellence, there's place for honesty, there's place doing good things - there's place for giving and not taking," he said.
Madiba's widow, Graca Machel, says the hospital will be a place of hope.
"Children deserve the very best every society can provide. And Madiba said to us: 'any society will be judged according to the way it treats its children.' This children's hospital is exactly stating that," she said.
