Durban man among two dead in Ironman championship

A Durban man is among two contestants who have died while taking part in the Ironman triathlon event in Port Elizabeth this morning. They were among those who had been competing in the swim event.
Police say one of them was a 63-year old man from George while the Durban man was 58-years of age. It's being reported they experienced difficulties and were rushed to hospital where they died.
In a brief statement, Ironman South Africa said that it was working with local authorities to gather all details and would continue to do everything possible to provide a safe environment for athletes.
Police spokesperson, in Port Elizabeth, Pricilla Naidu says police have opened inquest dockets.
"We can confirm that there were two fatalities this morning - in relation to the Ironman competition. We are investigating two cases of inquest," Naidu said.
