10 000 guns destroyed in KZN, E Cape

More than 10 000 firearms from both KZN and the Eastern Cape have been destroyed by police in Durban.

Police commissioner Bheki Cele and Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa attended the firearms destruction in Isipingo yesterday.

Cele's spokesperson, Nonkululeko Mbatha says more than 6 000 of the guns were collected in KZN.

The destruction comes in the wake of the current national gun amnesty campaign.

Mbatha says so far they've collected over 3 000 firearms during the period.

"We are pushing a very strong message out there ... that says 'surrender your firearms.' We are saying to the members of the community - and to all facilities: business, religious and any other, that they should take a crucial role and support police and government in this call for action to surrender illegal firearms, but also to surrender licensed firearms and unwanted firearms so that we rid our society of all these unwanted and illegal guns."

The firearms period will run until April 11. During this time, law abiding citizens who failed to register or renew their firearm licenses in 2009 can voluntarily hand over their weapons for destruction.
