40-year-old Kistensamy Naicker - better known as Lenny - was loading items into his bakkie when he was confronted by five gunmen at around 5pm yesterday afternoon.
The police's Vincent Mdunge says it's believed they demanded money from Naicker and when he didn't have any to give them - they shot him before fleeing in his bakkie.
"They are currently at large. We are investigating a case of murder with aggravating circumstances and our officers from the organised crime unit are pursuing all possibilities..."
Naicker was a well known businessman in the Umkomaas area.
He ran Crowders Poultry and also owned a butchery in nearby Roseneath.
Local farmer Mike Holmes says they're shocked by what's happened.
"We as the community of Crowders are extremely shocked at this tragic loss of life. (He was) somebody who did so much for the area and always a very friendly and gentle person. Our sincere condolences (go out) to Lenny's wife, Sandra, and the entire family."
