D-day for e-filers

20 November 2009 - 16:45
By ECR Reporter

Today is D-day for South Africans who are submitting their tax returns electronically.

From tomorrow, the taxman will no longer accept submissions.

SARS says nearly two million taxpayers still have to submit their return.

Those who do not will face new penalties - which will be introduced from Monday.

This includes getting fined a fee - every month - depending on salaries.

SARS' Adrian Lackay says their offices will close at 6pm today, while registered e-filers have until midnight to submit.

Lakay has meanwhile dismissed rumors that their e-filing service crashed yesterday.

"Yesterday we had more than 100 00 returns that were submitted on e-filing. I fail to understand how we were able to capture those volumes if it is true that our system crashed or was down. E-filing is up and running we have set new records for the volumes of traffic we are able to manage, the same goes for the call center and it is absolutely not true that the system was unavailable."
