It's been a big day for Durban. The city's officially presented the fully completed Moses Mabhida stadium to the media at a packed launch - and launched the Sky Car.

The stadium's cost R3 098 212 753 and created 26 000 notional jobs.

eThekwini municipality's Head of the Strategic Projects Unit and 2010 Programme Julie-May Ellingson says it's been built in an amazing 32 months.

She says the iconic stadium will be officially opened to the public on Sunday afternoon, when AmaZulu FC take on Maritzburg United.

Ellingson says the past few years have been a journey of a lifetime.

"I'm feeling very exhilarated, I think. It's been an amazing journey. But it's certainly has had its ups and its downs and as a team, I think we've certainly shown what South Africans can do and we're proud of the fact."

And Ellingson says the Sky Car - the furnicular which travels up the arch to a viewing platform at the top - will be open to the public from the first week of December.

"Basically it takes 25 people at a time. It goes up 106 metres to the viewing platform. It takes about two minutes to get to the top. The views from the top are just spectacular, both during the day and in the evening. And I think its going to be a real tourism asset for Durban."
