The Medicines Control Council has suspended the sale of dieting capsules, Simply Slim.
This after it has been found that the product is not registered with the Council as a medicine.
It is being sold at various retail outlets including health shops and pharmacies and has been actively marketed as a complementary herbal weight loss product.
After testing the product, the Council found the pills contain one ingredient that is not listed.
They say this is also a schedule 5 substance which may only be sold on a prescription from a doctor.
The Health Department's Fidel Hadebe says the Council also received complaints about nausea, headaches, psychological and cardiovascular problems.
He's called on members of the public to stop using Simply Slim until further investigations are complete,
"They have every right within the regulation to lodge an appeal with the Medicines Control Council which will be then considered with the view to either affirming or achieving retribution, but as the matter stands the expectation is that the product should have been withdrawn from the shelves now nationally."
