Actress Brittany Murphy died after taking a cocktail of prescription drugs, a US coroner has said.

It’s been revealed she’d taken "multiple" prescription pills before collapsing at her Hollywood Hills home in December.

Brittany was 32-years old.

Experts say the primary cause of death was pneumonia, with iron-deficiency anaemia being a secondary factor, along with drug intoxication.

Brittany’s mother and husband have said that the actress didn't abuse prescription medications or have an eating disorder.

Her mum said the actress was cautious about drinking caffeine or alcohol after being diagnosed with mitral valve collapse.

"She had a fear of dying. She would not take too much caffeine. She wouldn't even have a glass of champagne on New Year's."
